BOOKED investigates Darkly Dreaming Dexter

Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay ISBN: 038551123X

What makes a psychopath? BOOKED experts dissect this question as they deconstruct the unusual story of Dexter Morgan - a serial killer with a conscience who only kills those that 'deserve' to die. Featuring:

Writer Rap Sheet: Jeff Lindsay
Author Jeff Lindsay
"Writing at any time is difficult, because in order to do it you have to leave yourself wide open, which lets in a lot of stuff you don't want to deal with. I am a total neurotic, so there were times when I was thinking, 'the first book wasn't very good; why don't I just die?' and there were times when I was thinking, 'how can I write a book as good as the first book?"
--Author Jeff Lindsay

Jeff Lindsay grew up in Miami, Florida, the setting of his Dexter books. He holds a double MFA in Playwriting and Directing, and his plays have been produced in his home country of the USA as well as in the UK. A musician, columnist, actor, world karate champion, television host, husband, and father to three girls, Lindsay found that no matter what career path he went down, they all led him back to writing.

Lindsay recalls a fateful Kiwanis luncheon at which he was the guest speaker, “I don’t have anything against the Kiwanis. But I was sitting there at the head table looking out at the audience getting ready to speak, and it just popped into my head. ‘Serial murder isn’t always a bad thing.’” And that was the birth of Dexter, star of the two novels, Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter.

Lindsay credits his acting background with the inspiration for telling the story from Dexter’s point of view, “it seemed like a fun exercise in exploring a character who is very unlike me.” They do seem to share a similar dark sense of humour though, “I want somebody to laugh, then feel the goose bumps on the back of their neck.”

Showtime is making a movie based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

Case Book: Dr. Judy Ustina, Psychiatrist
Psychiatrist Dr. Judy Ustina

"Almost invariably people who are serial killers have had a very traumatic childhood. It's usually not one individual event, but consistent, twisted abuse - emotional and physical - by a significant caretaker in their lives."
--Dr. Judy Ustina

We sat down with Dr. Judy Ustina to talk about her work. Here's what she told us:

I’m a child psychiatrist at the Glenrose Hospital (Edmonton, Alberta). Among other things, I run the affective disorder clinic which treats children with depression, bipolar affective disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, school refusal phobias, different things like that. We treat these severe psychiatric disorders to help these children become able to function in a regular classroom and at home again.

The earlier you start treatment, the more positive change you can create in a child’s life. For example, if you can change the vector they’re going off in by five degrees at age six, then by the time they’re an adult you’ve dramatically changed what they’re capable of doing in their lives, the direction they go, the way they feel as a grownup. I help these children believe in themselves, help themselves academically, and give them some direction. Often if they’re left without intervention they end up feeling like a failure, which dramatically affects them the rest of their lives.

When you work with kids, there’s a real hope that you can dramatically change the kind of life they are going to live for the better. We work with these children and their families, and help them before negative thought processes and behaviors become ingrained. I do what I do because I love it.
