Q: Why can't I log in?
A: Have you registered? Seriously, you must register in order to log in.
Have you been banned from the board? (A message will be displayed if
you have.) If so, you should contact the administrator to find out
why. If you have registered and are not banned and you still cannot
log in then check and double-check your username and password. Usually
this is the problem. [top]
Q: Why do I get logged off automatically?
A: If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you log in,
the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents
misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the
box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from
a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university cluster,
etc. [top]
Q: How do I prevent my username from appearing in the online user listings?
A: In your profile you will find a button labelled 'Hide your online
status'; if you switch this on you'll only appear to board administrators
and yourself, and will be counted as a hidden user. [top]
Q: I've lost my password!
A: Don't panic! While your password cannot be retrieved it can be reset.
To do this go to the login page and click “I've forgotten my
password”. Follow the instructions and you should be back online
in no time. [top]
Q: I registered but cannot log in!
A: Check your username and password. Also ensure that the email address
you entered is valid. If trouble persists, contact the administrator.
If it has been a while since you posted anything, your account may
have been deleted to reduce the size of the database. Try re-registering
and get involved in discussions. [top]
Q: How do I change my settings?
A: All your settings can be accessed by clicking the Profile link at
the top of the forum. This will allow you to change all your settings.
Only registered users may change settings. [top]
Q: The times are not correct!
A: The forum is not displaying your timezone. You can change this in
your profile if you are a registered user. Note that the forum software
has trouble with daylight savings time, and so during those months
the time may be off by an hour. [top]
Q: How do I show an image below my username?
A: The image associated with your username is called an avatar. To give
yourself an avatar, click the profile link at the top of the forum.
At the bottom of your profile is the Avatar Control Panel: here you
can upload a picture from your machine, or choose one of the pictures
from our gallery. Note that there are size restrictions on avatars
that are uploaded: if your avatar is not working, chances are very
good that it is too large. [top]
Q: How do I add a signature to my post?
A: To add a signature to a post you must create one in your profile.
You can choose to add your signature only to specific posts by checking
the “Add Signature” box on the posting form, or you can
add your signature by default to all of your posts by checking the
appropriate box in your profile. [top]
Q: When I click the email, instant messenger, or send pm buttons for
a user it asks me to log in.
A: Sorry, but only registered users can send email or private messages
to our users. This is to prevent malicious use by anonymous users. [top]
Q: How do I post a topic in a forum?
A: Easy -- click the relevant button on either the forum or topic screens.
You may need to register before you can post a message. At the bottom
of the forum and topic screen is a list of what you can do. Registered
users can post, reply, edit and delete posts, and vote in polls. Non-registered
users have read-only access. [top]
Q: How do I edit or delete a post?
A: You can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit a post (sometimes
for only a limited time after it was made) by clicking the edit button
for the relevant post. If someone has already replied to the post,
you will find a small piece of text output below the post when you
return to the topic that lists the number of times you edited it. This
will only appear if no one has replied; it also will not appear if
moderators or administrators edit the post (they should leave a message
saying what they altered and why). Please note that normal users cannot
delete a post once someone has replied. [top]
Q: How do I create a poll?
A: Creating a poll is easy -- when you post a new topic you should see
an “Add Poll” form below the main posting box. You enter
a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option
type in the poll option box, and click the Add option button. You can
also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There
is a limit to the number of options you can list. [top]
Q: How do I edit or delete a poll?
A: As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a
moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first
post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If
no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll
option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators
or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people
rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll. [top]
Q: Why can't I vote in polls?
A: Only registered users can vote in polls. You must log in before voting. [top]
Q: What is BBCode?
A: BBCode is a special implementation of HTML, which you can also disable
on a per post basis from the posting form. BBCode itself is similar
in style to HTML: tags are enclosed in square braces [ and ] rather
than < and > and it offers greater control over what and how
something is displayed. For more information on BBCode see the guide
which can be accessed from the posting page. [top]
Q: Can I use HTML?
A: No. Booked.tv only supports BBCode. [top]
Q: Can I post Images?
A: Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility
at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you
must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g.
http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to
pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible
server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such
as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display
the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed).
Note that Booked.tv frowns on bandwidth leeching: do not connect directly
to a picture unless you are hosting it – there are plenty of
free image hosting services on the web. [top]
Q: What are Announcements?
A: Announcements often contain important information and you should read
them as soon as possible. Announcements appear at the top of every
page in the forum to which they are posted. [top]
Q: What are Sticky topics?
A: Sticky topics are always at the top of the list of forum topics, and
are used for threads that are always relevant, like member introductions.
[top]
Q: What are Locked topics?
A: Locked topics are read-only. A topic can only be locked by an administrator
or moderator. Once a topic is locked, any polls in it are closed, and
users cannot continue the conversation. [top]
Q: What are Administrators?
A: Administrators control all facets of board operation which include
setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators,
etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the forums.
[top]
Q: What are Moderators?
A: Moderators look after the running of the forums from day to day. They
have the power to edit or delete posts and lock, unlock, move, delete
and split topics in the forum they moderate. Generally moderators are
there to prevent people going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive
material. [top]
Q: Can I become a moderator?
A: If we need new moderators, we will approach users we feel are best
suited to the job. We like users who are strong contributors to the community.
[top]
Q: I cannot send private messages!
A: You must be registered and logged in to send private messages. If
you are logged in and still unable to send a message it is possible
that private messages have been disabled, or that you have had your
PM ability suspended. Contact the administrator if you are logged in
and cannot send messages. [top]
Q: How do I prevent unwanted private messages?
A: In the future we will be adding an ignore list to the private messaging
system. For now, though, if you keep receiving unwanted private messages
from someone, inform the board administrator -- they have the power
to prevent a user from sending private messages at all. [top]
Q: I have received spam or abusive email from someone on this board!
A: We are sorry to hear that. The email form feature of this board includes
safeguards to try to track users who send such posts. You should email
the board administrator with a full copy of the email you received
and it is very important this include the headers (these list details
of the user that sent the email). They can then take action.
