Howard Engel is the author of the Benny Cooperman mystery series. He is a founder of the Crime Writers of Canada, and was awarded the Arthur Ellis Best Novel award for Murder Sees the Light in 1985, the Derrick Murdoch Award in 1998, and in 1990 the Harbourfront Festival Prize for Canadian Literature. In addition to writing, Engel has worked as a reporter, teacher, and television producer, and holds an honourary Doctor of Law degree from Brock University. Engel is remarkable in that he is a writer who suffers from stroke-induced alexia - he cannot read.
