JoAnn McCartney is a former Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Vice Detective who has been involved in prostitution investigation and intervention for 17 years. McCartney works with women engaging in prostitution, supporting them as they work to change their lives, and has successfully brought those who exploit and abuse these women to justice. In 2002, McCartney retired from the EPS in order to help create and coordinate a court diversion program to help prostitutes through the criminal justice system, and into an exit plan to get out of prostitution. She now acts as a referral source, life coach and supervisor for prostitution survivors. McCartney has a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology and facilitates psychoeducational groups designed to assist sexually exploited women.
